
Ananya’s room felt smaller than it ever had before.
She closed the door behind her and stood for a long moment in the centre of the familiar space, listening to the soft sounds of the haveli continuing its ordinary afternoon. Somewhere in the courtyard a servant swept stone. Distant voices rose and fell. A bird called from the neem tree beyond the outer wall. Everything outside her door remained unchanged. Everything inside her had been permanently rewritten.
